Oculoplastic surgery / Blepharoplasty

Oculoplastic surgery is the area of ophthalmology that focuses on the aesthetics and pathology of the eyelids, tear duct and eye socket (the cavity where the eye is housed). It encompasses a wide variety of surgical procedures that treat conditions of these structures, such as eyelid malpositions, blepharitis, loss of elasticity of the skin around the eyes, or eyelid tumours.

Meanwhile, blepharoplasty is an aesthetic surgical procedure that involves removing excess skin and fat from the eyelids in order to restore a more youthful look to the eyes. It also encompasses procedures to correct trichiasis (when eyelashes grow inwards toward the eye), ptosis (when the upper eyelid droops over the eye) or entropion/ectropion (when the eyelid turns inwards or outwards). These surgical procedures have become straightforward, but the needs of each patient must always be correctly identified by a professional.

Blepharoplasty and other oculoplastic surgical procedures are performed by the expert surgeon Dr Martínez Grau at our centre. Boasting more than 25 years of experience in the profession, Dr Martínez Grau has completed extensive training in various areas of ophthalmology, in particular those related to oculoplastic surgery.

He has trained internationally with expert ophthalmologists in Mexico City, Munich and New York, becoming a leading expert in blepharoplasty, eye rejuvenation, botulinum toxin treatments and other oculoplastic procedures.

Over the course of his career, he has combined his healthcare work with teaching (as an associate lecturer at Ramon Llull University), research and conference presentations. In addition to reviewing and editing for scientific journals such as Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (OPRS), he has authored and co-authored indexed articles and several specialty books.

Dr Martínez Grau currently presides over the Spanish Society of Ocular and Orbital Plastic Surgery (SECPOO) and serves as the medical director and ophthalmologist at Clínica de la Mirada in Barcelona.

Retina / Macular Degeneration

Few medical specialties have undergone such a major transformation in the past few years as the ophthalmology subspecialty of Vitreoretinal Medicine, which has seen advances in both the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the macula, the vital center of the retina and vision. Our specialists are constantly learning in order to keep up with […]

Pediatric Ophthalmology

Children’s ophthalmology, strabismus and even binocular vision disorders in adults constitute “another world” in the field of ophthalmology. There is near unanimous consensus among ophthalmologists that expert medical and paramedical staff (opticians, optometrists, etc.) as well as specific tests are required for the treatment of pediatric patients in order to provide them with the best […]

Cataracts / Anterior Segment

The anterior portion of the eye, i.e. the front part, which goes from the outermost layer, the transparent cornea, to the posterior of the crystalline lens and which would be the equivalent of a camera lens, is at the epicenter of a number of eye and vision conditions, among which the most common, by far, […]

Refractive Surgery

Refractive surgery is one of our team’s major subspecialities and it is the cornerstone of clinical activity at our center. Born of the passion for refractive surgery that was transmitted to the director of the clinic, Dr. Tsiplakos, from his very first years at the Ophthalmology Unit of Clínica Barraquer in Barcelona side to side […]

Glaucoma / Ocular Hypertension

Ocular hypertension is the permanent or intermittent elevation of the pressure inside the eye above the normal range. It is not a disease in itself but it is a risk factor because it can lead to glaucoma and cause irreversible damage to vision. This type of hypertension is common and has no outward symptoms, so […]
